Current and aspiring politicians across England and Wales are being asked to show their support for effective policing and the protection of the constable rank by signing up to The Real Policing Pledge.
The Real Policing Pledge is being launched by the Constables' Central Committee of the Police Federation of England and Wales and it seeks to get current MPs, Peers, Welsh Assembly Members and prospective parliamentary candidates to show their support for five key principles of policing.
These are; upholding the Office of Constable as the bedrock of modern policing; maintaining the number of warranted police constables in England and Wales; ensuring that all constables are adequately trained to do their jobs; committing to maintaining an effective ratio of police constables to support staff on community policing teams; and honouring the Police Negotiating Board (PNB).
Politicians will be sent an electronic and hard copy of the leaflet, which is in English and in Welsh, and can either complete and return a signed paper copy pledge or complete it online at http://www.realpolicingpledge.org.uk/
Paul Lewis, Chairman of the Constables' Central Committee of the Police Federation of England and Wales, says;
"As we enter the final months before a General Election, the time is absolutely right for current and aspiring politicians to show their commitment to the core principles of policing. We trust they will show their support for the 110,000 police constables throughout England and Wales by signing up to our pledge and ensuring the future wellbeing of the police service."
The names of those who have signed up to the Real Policing Pledge will be published at www.polfed.org/constables.asp
