Government approval for a new generation of Taser is welcome - but it does not answer how forces will be able to fund its roll-out, according to West Midlands Police Federation interim chairman Tom Cuddeford. The Home Office announced its approval of the new X2 model of Taser for police in the UK last week.
As part of our local and national Police Federation campaign to push for better legal protection for Police Officers and reduce Officer assaults, please take part in the below Taser survey and tell us your views. The survey takes no more than 10 minutes and closes in mid January. This has been asked before however we need up to date views.
Tom Cuddeford our Interim Chair says: “West Midlands officers fully support the wider availability of Taser. Set against a reduction of 2000 officers in the last five years and a rise in both demand and threat Taser is important for the protection of both the public and officers themselves. “I echo the sentiments of our national chair, Steve White, who outlines the clear need for the support of chief constables and Police and Crime Commissioners across England and Wales, to ensure a wider rollout of Taser and to press government for increased funding to assist with this.
Police officers will be given the opportunity to have their say on what they think of Taser as the Home Office release latest figures showing an increase in use but a decrease in the number of times it has been fired. The survey, launched today, is aimed at gauging officers’ attitudes to issues such as rolling it out to more officers, training and safety issues. The results will directly feed into Police Federation policy and will be the first to focus solely on the less-lethal option.
Responding to figures released today showing an increase in police use of Taser, Steve White, Vice-Chair, Police Federation of England and Wales, says:
In each edition of Federation magazine we put a topical question to a selection of officers and publish their responses in this feature.
