  • The leader of West Midlands Police Federation is welcoming police officers from across the UK and overseas to Birmingham this week for the annual national conference of the Police Federation of England and Wales which is being hosted in the city for the first time. Tom Cuddeford, chairman of the West Midlands Police branch of the staff association, says the conference, which is being held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) tomorrow and Wednesday (16 and 17 May) will provide a great opportunity to showcase Birmingham and all it has to offer.

  • Officers from West Midlands Police Federation will be making a poignant trip to London today for the funeral of PC Keith Palmer. Thousands of police officers and staff, as well as other emergency service workers and members of the public, will line the streets of the capital ahead of the full police service funeral which is being held at 2pm at Southwark Cathedral. PC Palmer was stabbed to death in the Westminster terror attack on 22 March which left four people dead and around 50 people injured, including three other Metropolitan Police officers.

  • West Midlands Police Federation has welcomed a watchdog inspection report that grades the Force as ‘good’ in terms of its effectiveness at keeping people safe and reducing crime. But Tom Cuddeford, interim chairman of the Federation branch which represents the Force’s constables, sergeants and inspecting ranks, says the report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) also highlights some areas of concern and identifies that the Force needs to improve the way in which it protects those who are vulnerable from harm and supports victims.

  • Today’s announcement from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) of an eight per cent increase in recorded crime in the last year is alarming, according to Tom Cuddeford, leader of West Midlands Police Federation. But Tom, interim chairman of the Federation branch which represents the Force’s constables, sergeants and inspectors, has welcomed the inclusion of fraud and cybercrime in the figures for the first time.

  • Just two per cent of officers have failed their fitness test according to figures released by the College of Policing today. The figures show an average pass rate of 98 per cent based on a total of 93,956 tests carried out between September 2014 and August 2015.

  • An unarmed West Midlands police officer who single-handedly took on an axe-wielding man has been nominated for a Police Bravery Award. Constable Paul Hopley will be recognised at the 21st Police Bravery Awards on 14 July. The awards honour and recognise police officers who performed outstanding acts of bravery while on or off duty, and are sponsored by Police Mutual.
