  • The morale of officers at West Midlands Police is among the worst in the country - according to the findings of a pay and morale survey. Two thirds (66.3 per cent) of respondents from the Force said they were suffering from low personal morale – putting the Force in the top three. And 96 per cent said Force morale was low. This puts the Force fifth in this category – with 38 forces with a smaller proportion of respondents who feel that morale within their force is low.

  • All Federation members across the country are going to be asked if they would like to be routinely armed in a survey being conducted throughout August. The Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) survey will be sent directly to officers via the member database.

  • Pay award delay ‘unacceptable’

    The Government’s decision to delay making an announcement on officers’ pay award until September is unacceptable, says West Midlands Police Federation chairman Tom Cuddeford. MPs start their summer recess today and the Government announced yesterday that a decision on police pay will not be made until after their return to Parliament on 5 September.

  • A bill calling for tougher sentences for those who assault police officers and other emergency service workers won cross-party support in the House of Commons yesterday. The Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Private Members’ Bill, presented by Chris Bryant, the MP for Rhonda, will now go forward for a second reading on 20 October.

  • HRH The Countess of Wessex will be among those honouring the 70 police officers nominated for this year’s Police Bravery Awards. The West Midlands nominees for the awards are PCs Ryan Patel and James Neilson who confronted and chased armed robbers. Eight regional winners will be named with one of those being selected as the overall winner for 2017.

  • A Private Member’s Bill calling for changes in the law to better protect police and other emergency service workers from assaults will be presented in Parliament next Wednesday (19 July). The bill will be put forward by Labour MP for Rhondda Chris Bryant who, having been given the opportunity to put forward one of six bills, asked people to vote for which they preferred in an online poll.
